A gymnasium floor is often the most expensive surface in any school or recreation facility. Hardwood basketball courts typically cost $50,000 to $100,000 to install, and a full sand-and-refinish runs $3 to $8 per square foot every 5 to 10 years. Most gyms serve as multi-purpose spaces, not just for team sports. They host graduations, dances, assemblies, career fairs, banquets, and community events that bring chairs, tables, high heels, and heavy foot traffic onto a surface designed for sneakers.
A gym floor cover is the most effective way to protect that investment. The right cover prevents scratches, scuffs, stains, and moisture damage during non-athletic events while keeping the floor game-ready underneath. This guide covers the types of gym floor covers available, how to choose the right weight for your facility's usage, how to size your order, and the accessories that make setup and storage easier. For a deeper look at why gym floor protection matters and the ROI it delivers, see our article on gym floor cover benefits, costs, and ROI.

Types of Gym Floor Covers
There are three main categories of gym floor covering, and each serves a different purpose. Most facilities benefit from a combination of two or all three.
Vinyl Gym Floor Covers. The workhorse of gym floor protection. GymGuard® vinyl floor covers are constructed from heavy-duty 3-ply fabric that's PVC-coated on both sides, making it waterproof, fire-retardant, and resistant to rot, mildew, and bacteria. They come in 10-foot-wide rolls that are custom cut to the length of your gym and deployed by unrolling them side by side across the floor with 6-12 inches of overlap between sections. An entire regulation basketball court can be covered by just two people in about 30 minutes. Vinyl covers are the best option for full-court protection during high-traffic events like graduations, trade shows, banquets, and dances. They are available in multiple weights (covered in the next section) and 11 standard colors.
Gym Floor Runners. GymGuard® gym floor runners are narrower vinyl strips designed for high-traffic walkways, bench areas, courtside zones, and entry paths. They protect the areas that take the most daily wear without covering the full court. Runners are built from 32 oz. vinyl with custom printing available, and each one ships with a storage tube for easy handling. For facilities that do not need full-court coverage for every event, runners combined with partial vinyl coverage can protect the highest-impact zones at a lower cost than a full floor system.
Carpet Tiles. Gym carpet tiles are modular panels that lay flat edge to edge without adhesive. They will not wrinkle, ripple, or slide, which eliminates tripping hazards without the need for taping seams. Carpet tiles are the better choice when acoustics matter. Gymnasiums are hard-surfaced rooms where sound bounces, and a carpet tile system significantly reduces reverberation, making the space more comfortable for lectures, commencement ceremonies, concerts, and presentations. They are also easier to replace in sections if a panel gets damaged, rather than replacing an entire roll. The non-staining polyolefin backing will not mark hardwood floors.

What Weight Gym Floor Cover Do I Need
GymGuard® vinyl floor covers are available in multiple weights. The right weight depends on how often you plan to use the cover and how much traffic it needs to handle. Heavier covers last longer under heavy use but cost more upfront. Lighter covers are a better value for facilities that only need protection a few times per year.
| Cover Weight | Recommended Usage | Best For |
| 18 oz. | Occasional use (6 times per year or less) | Schools with infrequent non-athletic events |
| 22 oz. | Moderate use (6-12 times per year) | Best balance of price and durability for most schools |
| 27 oz. | Regular use (12-24 times per year) | Multi-use facilities with busy event calendar |
| 32 oz. | Heavy or constant use (24+ times per year) | Convention centers, community rec centers, college arenas |
Every GymGuard® weight is fire-retardant to NFPA 701, California Fire Marshal, and UL 300 standards. All weights exceed ADA and OSHA requirements for slip-resistant surfaces. For facilities that host particularly high-traffic events like trade shows or career fairs with heavy rolling equipment, GymGuard® Plus features an embossed non-slip pattern for additional traction on top of the standard 32 oz. construction.
If you are unsure which weight fits your situation, a good rule of thumb is to count the number of non-athletic events your gym hosts per year and match it to the table above. When in doubt, go one weight heavier. The cost difference between weights is modest compared to the extended life you get from a more durable cover.
Sizing Your Gym Floor Cover
Gym floor covers are constructed in 10-foot-wide sections. To figure out how many rolls you need, start with the width of the area you want to cover and divide by 9.5 (accounting for the 6-inch overlap between sections). Then determine the length each roll needs to be.
A few sizing decisions to make before measuring:
Full court or partial coverage? Full-court coverage protects the entire playing surface, but covering wall to wall is not recommended because you need room along the edges for storage racks and installation access. Most facilities cover the athletic surface and leave a 2 to 3-foot border.
Bleacher position. If your gym has retractable bleachers, decide whether the cover needs to fit with them extended or retracted. This changes the usable floor area significantly.
Obstacles. Columns, stage areas, and doorways all affect how your rolls are cut and laid out. Plan on using runners to fill gaps around mid-floor obstacles rather than cutting custom shapes into your main rolls.
For step-by-step measuring instructions, including how to handle retractable bleachers and mid-floor columns, see our how to measure for a new gym floor cover guide.
Quick sizing example: A standard high school basketball court measures 84 feet long by 50 feet wide. Covering the full court requires six 10-foot wide rolls cut to 84 feet, with 6 inches of overlap on each seam. Add runners for the bench areas and entry paths, and the facility is fully protected.
What Accessories Do You Need for a Gym Floor Cover
A gym floor cover works best as part of a complete system. These accessories speed up deployment, protect the cover during storage, and make the entire process easier for your crew.
Storage rack. A GymGuard® mobile storage rack is essential for any vinyl gym cover system. The rack holds your rolled covers on steel rollers, rolls on non-marking urethane wheels, and allows two people to deploy or retract the entire system in about 30 minutes. Available in 6, 8, and 10-roller models, depending on how many sections your floor requires. Without a rack, covers need to be folded, which causes creases that create tripping hazards and break down the fabric over time.
Rack cover. A printed rack cover keeps your covers clean and protected during storage, prevents dust and overhead leaks from reaching the fabric, and deters anyone from climbing on the rack. Custom graphics turn the rack into a branded display for your school or facility.
Tape and dispensers. GymGuard® tape is formulated specifically for gym floors and will not leave residue or damage the finish when removed. Use it to secure seams and edges during events. The amount of tape you need depends on the event type. A graduation with chairs over the seams may need minimal taping, while a dance with full foot traffic across every section may need every seam and border taped down. A walk-behind dispenser speeds up the process and eliminates bending.
Power winder. The GymGuard® power winder attaches to the storage rack and automates the roll-up process, eliminating hand cranking and cutting retraction time significantly.
Brush assembly. The brush assembly attaches to the storage rack and sweeps each section clean as it is wound up, so the cover goes into storage ready for the next deployment without a separate cleaning step.
Maintenance and Care
Vinyl gym floor covers require very little maintenance, but a few habits will extend their life significantly. Sweep or brush off loose debris before rolling up. Clean spills with a mild detergent and water. Never fold covers for storage, and always roll them onto the rack. Folded covers crease, and those creases become permanent weak points in the fabric and tripping hazards on the floor.

Choosing the Right Gym Floor Cover for Your Facility
The decision comes down to three factors: what events your gym hosts, how often it hosts them, and how much of the floor needs to be covered. Most facilities get the best results from a vinyl roll cover system sized to their court dimensions, matched to the right weight for their event frequency, and paired with runners for high-traffic walkways and entry paths. Carpet tiles are the right addition when sound quality matters for the events you host.
